Femur Fractures Caused by Fosamax

Who would have expected that the drug which supposed to heal and prevent osteoporosis is now the one causing severe bone problems to thousands of users all around the country?

Fosamax, also known as alendronate sodium, is held responsible to atypical femur (thigh) fractures which has prompted the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a warning about its risk in 2010.  The FDA warned the public that bisphosphonates used to treat osteoporosis had been linked to femur fractures.  They urged doctors to report any fractures to their MedWatch program and asked manufacturers of bisphosphonates drugs such as Merck to inform and warn patients and healthcare providers.

Femur fractures often occur without any trauma or other accident, such as while just walking or standing, and are often called low energy fractures.  According to a study published on the Journal of Orthopedic Trauma in June 2008, it was found out that the Fosamax drug causes fractures of the femur.

According to various reports, patients who are suffering fractures had also made complaints to their doctors of pain in their thighs, hips, and groin for weeks or even months before their femurs actually fractured.  It was also reported that if a patient on Fosamax complains of thigh or groin pain, which may be described as dull or aching, and stops taking Fosamax then the deterioration of the bone would also stop.

To lessen and avoid the harmful side effects of Fosamax, the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research Subtrochanteric Femoral Fracture Task Force asked manufacturers and drug resellers that the labeling for Fosamax and similar drugs be rewritten to reflect the thigh fracture risk.

Due to the increasing rate of fosamax femur fracture complaints, more and more patients are now seeking financial compensation through lawsuits.  If you think you or your loved one is currently suffering a femur fracture while taking Fosamax, it’s advisable that you contact your nearest product liability lawyers and ask for a free case evaluation.  They will guide you on how to win your Fosamax lawsuit and get the financial settlement that you deserve.
